XIX century illustration describing the auxanometer, apparatus for measuring the growth of plants. A wire is fixed to the the plant apex on one end and a dead-weight on the other. As the plant grows, the pulley rotates and the pointer moves on a circular scale. Little is known on whether the auxanometer itself speeds up the growth by pulling the plant upwards.
