Chemistry engraving – extracting oxygen from potassium chlorate

A simple device to extract oxygen from potassium chlorate. The potassium chlorate was heated in a flask and the resulting gas was collected in a closed cylinder immersed in water, where the water acted as a sealant to prevent air from contaminating the product. To speed up the reaction and lower the oxide melting point some manganese dioxide was often added to the potassium chlorate.
